It is the goal of A is for Art Preschool to provide a comfortable and nurturing environment for children that fosters their growth as a whole individual and as a member of community. Primary objectives of all lessons and experiences are thinking, observing, questioning and understanding. Curriculum covers early literacy skills, science, math and social studies with a strong daily emphasis on the arts while following a world-history time line beginning with prehistoric art and ending in the modern-art era.
Students work and play at self-selected projects and games, alone or with classmates, that develop social, cognitive, emotional, and fine-motor skills. During art lessons, the class works together on a teacher-directed project centered around a theme or skill. While most of the children's art work will be done individually, some projects will be done cooperatively as a class. Large-motor skills are developed during creative movement, when children strengthen their bodies, hone expressive skills through dramatic play, dance and music interpretation. Large-motor skills are further advanced at gym time, where games, team-work and a shared open space encourage positive social interaction and exercise.
Communication between parents and teachers is encouraged to maintain the exchange of information and ideas and provide the best education for each individual in the school. Parents are welcomed in the classroom and are invited to share their talents and knowledge with the class.
Special guests and field trips help the children learn about the neighborhood, jobs and opportunities within the community and positive social behaviors outside of class.
Age-appropriate community service is also a goal of A is for Art Preschool. The students of the school will have an active part in this important contribution.
Finally, A is for Art Preschool hosts Pot-Luck Art Openings in the Winter and Spring to showcase students' work and foster the development of the school’s family-community. Students are encouraged to invite their families and friends, as it a goal of the preschool that these two events be major highlights in each student's academic year.
